Post subject:  H Exhaust Manifold Questions

Hello, all. I'll bet it's been over a year since I've posted on the board. Good to be back.

This summer I "just had to have" another H treasure that I found at a used equipment dealer. According to the serial number, there were only five more H models made. All the tin is good--even if it was painted not quite the right red (or has faded). Ran pretty good, except for the blue smoke, and needed a few things fixed and greased and re-gasketed and tuned up.

I discovered yesterday that the manifold has a couple of holes in it. They're about 1/8-to-3/16" in diameter, a few inches above where the manifold joins the carburetor. One is on the side surface, and the other toward the rear. Blows exhaust pretty good through those holes.

I suppose I could find someone to weld or braze or whatever a couple of patches over the holes, but I don't think I want to do that. I'd just as soon replace it with something new.

The bolts look pretty good and clean--not rusted as the manifold itself. I would hope they'll come out without too much trouble.

Questions are: what's a good source for a new manifold? Who should I consider and who should I avoid? And does anyone have any handy tips for changing one? What should I do, and not do, etc.

I await your collective wisdom  Thanks.

David

They may have been drain holes. I have not been too impressed with the new manifolds. Any I've seen were import. I would hunt for a nice original.
Bolts? They should be studs with nuts.

David, Howard,

I too haven't been on here in ages--my bad!! Howard was right, I have the original manifold I took off the H I have and it has no holes. I have used self threading small bolt/screw and used that to seal it up till I've gotten a new one--had to do that on another tractor.

By the way, I got a mystery notice from ?? that Rusty Sloan passed away last week--he used to be on here as Iron Oxide. Only 59, what a shame!!

Hope all is well!! Y'all have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!!

Steve

All my H's have the 2 drain holes, You really need them. Sometimes they get filled with crap and you have to take a small bit or wire to them.
