Hi Guys I seem to have a few problems with my SM, And my SH running and could use some help.
First SM, It was built for a pulling tractor, Oversized High domes shaved head, Rockit gov, 15.5 x 38 tires. When it runs it will idle just as smooth as a baby's bottom, If you throttle it up at all and let off she pops and back fires. If you get it warm and try to shut it down it diesels . If you let her idle for 5 min's after working it most times she will shut down ok. Oh it has a dist with standard points and condenser and a external dodge resistor. Well yesterday I was trying to disc some corn ground and a stalk kicked the wire off the resistor, Before she could even quit she I think started to run back words. She was blowing flames through intake and carb and sounded funny I ended up putting it in high gear and popping clutch and stopped this crap. It will not restart. :( I got it towed to shop pouring out today so have not had a chance to pull her apart thought for sure I blew her up. Generally I run 89 oct gas. But may have put some 87 in her accidently. I scoped spark plug holes last fall and no carbon build up nice and clean.
ANY IDEAS WHATS GOING ON WITH MY OLD WORK HORSE???

Now to the H about 6 or 7 years ago I rebuilt this H for a pulling tractor , H motor , Over bore High domes, Head and block Shaved, SH cam and lifters, I rebuilt gov with the best parts I had in box of gov parts new IH spring. I had a 300 intake all soaked and polished up intakes with 300 carb. It has about 165 psi compression.
It has never run right too much fuel. So I replaced the intake with a reg H one and H carb runs ok but lacks power. And runs rich, either to lean or too rich. Just does not seem to have the right throttle response RPM's or torque. Did same with 300 carb also so I do not think its a carb issue.
What do you think this could be? I have had gov apart with running seems to be adjusted correctly and working good she will pull up a hill in 3rd gear at low idle but put her on discs and she has no power? You think I need to tweak factory timing? because of the rebuild?
I am kinda lost here. Tried about everything.
THANKS JON

So I had a chance to tear the SM apart between rain drops last night. When she shut down and dieseled it blew both center exhaust gaskets out. That must have been the fire I saw under the hood not coming out intake coming out between head and manifold, I suppose that's why it sounded weird also. So low and behold I had an extra set of gaskets in the cabinet. Small air powered angle grinder thingy scotch brite pads and back together. I did notice the 2 center area's that blew out on the exhaust manifold were rusted and deteriorated, anyone know of a way to help that area without buying a new manifold?
Still puffed smoke and would not run this AM back to drawing board I guess.

So I also guess I need to turn the main in a tad she must be getting to much fuel. This tractor has won more trophy's Than most stock farm tractors around. she even ran with the enhanced big dogs a few times and took first. I ran it for the guy once and took a first place trophy. He got mad cause I paid the entry fee and wanted to take the prize home he thought because it was his tractor it should be his, Oh well I bought it off him that fall and have run it on the discs and farm every since. She is a tad tired now! I pulled it once myself after that and got beat by An A JD and other M's so I retired it too farm. LOL

UPDATE #2
SM is purring like a kitten again! Redid wire on resistor with new end grandson got on hit the starter rod and away she went. :D  Gonna get some sea foam and put it through carb and see if that helps . Retorqued intake after running we will see.
How about that Built H any idea's ????? :?:

That exhaust/intake manifold can be fixed by running it over a surface grinder to grind it flat so it will make a good seal again and not leak.

Mix in a 1/2 tank of E-85,that will give you more fuel and more octane too.

Well here in NY where I live I have not seen anything like that until last week, A local gas station has a yellow handle pump I figured it was kero. But I looked and it says E90 , I wonder if that would make that high compression H run better? If I can tune the carb to it?

For many years I have run 93 octane in all machinery, even farm tractors, I dont have any ethanol issues like carb pluggin up, My Farmall 350 and h have sat since sept. and they both started right up like it was yesterday I ran them.

Heck dave its hard to even find 93 up here anymore. Most have 87, 89, and 90 or 91. And the 90 or 91 no ethanol is $3.00 a gallon .

I will mention a couple other things, these suggestions are to prevent ethanol problems, I have used 91 octane with a 50:1 mix of 2 stroke oil, (5 gallons 91 octane with 1/2 gallon of diesel fuel mix), 1 quart of ATF with 91 octane.
Now the next question was I lucky?!! Well I didnt have any Octane issues.
We do have more non ethanol stations around us so eventually I will start going in that direction- just gotta change MR. 40acres habits! I know its more money using non ethanol gas or mixing my crazy potions but Im all for simple I just dread when something fails when you want to use it, or even when you use it.
